Guidelines for Submittng Text and Research Report Art (RAA)

Text

The preferred software for the report text is Microsoft Word for the Macintosh or Microsoft Word 6.0 for the PC. ASCII text is also acceptable.

Generally, figures in formal reports are printed in black and white. Color figures may be used only if data cannot be presented clearly and concisely in black and white. (For questions concerning the use of color contact Camilla McArthur at x2041.) Figures should be submitted electronically and on paper.

Electronic Figures

Currently, Graphics supports the following software and formats for figures:

• Adobe Illustrator
• Adobe Photoshop
• Canvas
• Claris Clad*
• Cricket Draw III*
• Cricket Graph III*
• Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) format
• Frame
• KaleidaGraph*
• MacDraw Pro*
• PICT format

*Note: figures form these programs shold be saved as PICT files

Most figures created with other software or in other formats can be accommodated. Contact Steve Lighthill x3940 with questions about electronic figures.

Photographs Electronically scanned photographs may be submitted. They should be saved as grayscale EPS files with a halftone screen of 85 lpi. (Please include the EC (photo)# in the file name.)

Figures From Another DFRC Report

Figures from another DFRC report can be used, please make sure you have the RRA# from the bottom right of the figure so the original electronic version can be retrieved from the archives.

Figure Specifications Authors may submit reports with art they have created to the Technical Publications Office. Certain categories of papers may allow the use of author generated art without going through the Graphics office provided they meet the minimum standards addressed below. (For clarification of paper categories contact Camilla McArthur at x2041.) These specifications are for the final figures and after any size reduction.

• Axis, data, and symbol lines should have a line weight of 1 pt.
• Tic marks and grid lines should have a line weight of .5 pt.
• Grid lines should be 25% black.
• Text and callouts should be 8 point Helvetica Bold. (note: Greek text should be slightly larger 10 to 11 point.)

Maximum figure sizes for a double column paper are as follows: Samples are shown in fig. 1 and 2.

For a paper with a single column format, the maximum figure size is 8 1/4 in. long by 6 7/8 in. wide. (Typically, papers are double column.)

Transfer of Electronic Files

• Submit on 3 1/2" floppies (Macintosh or PC format)
• Transferred electronically by E-mail or to a designated shared volume. (Contact the Technical Publications Office for network zone and volume name.)

UNIX Research Report Art

XPLOT and QuickPlot files can be transferred to Macintosh diskette using the following procedure.

1. When in XPLOT or QuickPlot, write a file: On the command line type: print "filename".
2. On the Mac open Fetch. (Fetch can be found on the Keyserver under FTP utilities)
3. Log onto the computer where the plot file resides.
4. Go to the directory where the file resides.
5. Highlight the plot file.
6. Click on Get File
7. Change filename if desired.
8. Click on Save
9. Repeat 5 - 8 for as many files as desired.
10. Close Connection to computer.
11. Copy the Macintosh file to a diskette and take it to TPO. For an unknown technical reason, the files cannot be E-mailed. They can, however, be edited with Canvas or similar application.

1. In MATLAB, save a postscript file by the following: print filename.eps -deps (the .eps is just to remind you it's an encapsulated postscript file, the -deps is the cmd for the above; see MATLAB Users Guide)
2. Transfer the file from the UNIX language computer to the Macintosh using Fetch, steps 2 to 10 above.
3. On the Macintosh, open the .eps file with Canvas or similar application.

On opening, the plot shows as an 'X' in the area where the plot is positioned. You can reposition but not edit the plot; the plot is printed on a print command.
