The first of NASA's two ER-2 high-altitude Earth science aircraft is maneuvered into place beside NASA's DC-8 flying laboratory and the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy 747SP in the cavernous Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility hangar in Palmdale, Calif. The two ER-2s, a civilian version of the military U-2S, have been transferred from NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base to the Palmdale facility, their new base of operations for science missions around the globe.
