Innovators at NASA’s Johnson Space Center have developed a hardware, firmware, and software-based system that performs real-time closed loop statistical analysis of single- or dual-channel serial digital radio frequency (RF) communications systems operating in very low signal-to-noise conditions. The Soft Decision Analyzer (SDA) provides comprehensive soft decision data statistics measurements and near-real-time noise distribution profiles. The innovation’s closed-loop detection allows it to simulate a live system and correlate observations with frame, codeword, and packet losses as well as quality of service and quality of experience events. The SDA offers continuous four-quadrant tracking for multiple modulation schemes and signal-to-noise ratio measurements using three separate techniques that work even in the presence of symbol-clipping. This software may be released for U.S. Government purposes only.
This technology is being made available through JSC’s Technology Transfer and Commercialization Office, which seeks to transfer technology into and out of NASA to benefit the space program and U.S. industry. NASA invites companies to consider licensing this technology for commercial applications.
