RELEASE : 05-250 NASA Updates Hurricane Katrina Relief and Recovery Efforts Approximately 50 non-agency evacuees, who had taken refuge at NASA’s Stennis Space Center (SSC), Miss., are being moved today to better hurricane relief shelters. Stennis is still being used by FEMA and other groups as a rescue-and-recovery staging area.

NASA is still working on locating all employees who work at SSC and Michoud Assembly Facility near New Orleans. Employees are asked to call toll-free: 877/470-5240 to check in.

Stennis Space Center:

NASA continues to temporarily house agency workers who lost their homes and don’t have any other place to stay

There are no reports of injuries to any NASA or contractor employees

Electrical power has been restored at SSC; there is limited phone service.

Food, clothing, medical supplies, fuel and personal hygiene items are arriving regularly for the emergency operations people working out of the center

Bill Parsons, the senior agency official in charge of NASA’s recovery efforts, arrived at SSC Monday to coordinate activities

Michoud Assembly Facility:

The facility is using generators for electricity, while progress is made getting the site back on the main power grid

Helicopters and boats are still the only way to transport supplies to the emergency operations people at the facility, while road are being cleared
