NASA Daily News Summary For Release: October 6, 1998 Media Advisory 98-44 TODAY'S SUMMARY: Antarctic Ozone Depletion Sets New Size Record Hubble Probes Outer Limits at Next Space Science Update NASA Contributes Technology to War on Cancer NASA Video File for Oct. 6, 1998 Upcoming Live Events: Live Television Events Related to STS-95 Note: The arrival of the STS-95 crew at the Kennedy Space Center, FL, is delayed today due to bad weather enroute. The delayed arrival is not expected to affect start of the 2-day Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test (TCDT) -- a "dress rehearsal" for launch -- scheduled to begin on Oct. 8, 1998. Aeronautics Conference, Oct. 9 ********** ANTARCTIC OZONE DEPLETION SETS NEW SIZE RECORD NASA and NOAA satellites show that the Antarctic ozone thinning covers the largest expanse of territory since the depletion developed in the early 1980s. The measurements were obtained this year between mid-August and early October using the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) instrument aboard NASA's Earth Probe (TOMS-EP) satellite and the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Instrument (SBUV) aboard the NOAA-14 satellite. A "long exposure" infrared image taken with Hubble's Near Infrared Camera and Multi- Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) has uncovered the faintest galaxies ever seen, possibly the farthest objects known in the Universe. Three panelists from the University of Arizona and the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution, Pasadena, CA, will participate.
