It's been 40 years since the first weather satellite was launched and changed our world forever. Today, scientists at NASA and NOAA are releasing some the some of first images from the newest weather satellite - GOES-11. Researchers are taking advantage of a special testing phase of the satellite to produce imagery of developing storm systems in unprecedented detail. The two Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) watching over North America produce imagery that has become an everyday fixture in our lives and is easy to take for granted. NASA Research Meteorologist Dr. Marshall Shepherd will be available Wednesday, August 9 from 6-10 a.m. EDT to discuss the latest images and the satellite weather forecasting legacy.
