NASA Daily News Summary For Release: Sept. 21, 2000 Media Advisory m00-181 SUMMARY NEWS RELEASES HUBBLE MOVIES SHOW THE CHANGING FACES OF YOUNG STARS NASA ANNOUNCES RESEARCH GRANTS IN MICROGRAVITY COMBUSTION SCIENCE ASTEROID EROS YIELDS SECRETS FROM TIME BEFORE EARTH WAS BORN VIDEO ***ALL TIMES EASTERN*** VIDEO FILE FOR SEPT. 21, 2000 UPCOMING TELEVISION EVENTS ***************************** NEWS RELEASES HUBBLE MOVIES SHOW THE CHANGING FACES OF YOUNG STARS Extraordinary time-lapse movies taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope show that spectacular outbursts from young stars can change dramatically over a period of just weeks or months. Before Hubble's sharp view, most scientists viewed the universe as timeless; things changed so slowly outside our own solar system researchers rarely considered the possibility of movies. Now with Hubble, pictures taken of the universe today won't necessarily look the same as those snapped a few months from now. This research will seek knowledge leading to innovative applications in space-based life support systems, crew safety and Earth-based energy conversion. Sponsored by NASA's Office of Life and Microgravity Science and Applications, the research offers investigators the advantage of a low-gravity environment to enhance understanding of fundamental physical and chemical processes associated with combustion. A list of awardees (by state), their institutions, and research titles can be found on the Internet at: ftp://ftp.hq.nasa.gov/pub/pao/pressrel/2000/00-144a.txt Contact at NASA Headquarters, Washington, DC: Carolyn Townsend (Phone: 202/358-1781) For full text see ftp://ftp.hq.nasa.gov/pub/pao/pressrel/2000/00-144.txt ---------------------------- ASTEROID EROS YIELDS SECRETS FROM TIME BEFORE EARTH WAS BORN The asteroid Eros is so ancient it could have witnessed the formation of the Earth, according to findings from NASA's Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) Shoemaker spacecraft published today. Four scientific papers published in the September 22 issue of the journal Science represent the largest one-time release of scientific data about Eros since the mission began. The NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft has been in orbit around the primitive Manhattan-sized asteroid since last February.
