Fires are burning around the City of Bratsk, and towns of Vikhorevka and Porozhskiy north of the Bratsk Reservoir in central Russia. Another area of fires are raging west of the reservoir near Shitkino, Russia.
The Bratsk Reservoir is located on the Angara River, in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia. The reservoir is about 2,110 square miles (5,470 square kilometers) and is named for the city of Bratsk, which is a large city adjacent to it.
NASA's Aqua satellite passed over the Bratsk fire on Oct. 1, 2011 at 06:15 UTC (2:15 a.m. EDT) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument onboard captured this image of smoke. The fires are indicated in red. The large plume of smoke from the various fires is blowing north-northeast in this image.
