Wildfires in Portugal

Smoke from wildfires in Portugal are visible in this image from The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite on Oct. 14, 2011 at 9:55 a.m. EDT. Fires or hot spots appear in red in the image. Forest covers about 38 percent of Portugal's land area. According to www.forestry.pt (Portugal's Forestry website), forest products are an important part of the country's export market.
