Fires appear to be burning east of Lake Gregory in the northern part of Western Australia. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image on August 19, 2012. Red outlines indicate hot spots where MODIS detected unusually warm surface temperatures associated with fires.
This could be a bushfire or it could be prescribed burning set to prevent larger fires from breaking out by burning underbrush within a controlled environment. Smoke from the fires is pouring out and the wind is carrying it west and northwest.
