  • This is an artist's concept of the Planck spacecraft

NASA TV News Conference to Discuss Planck Cosmology Findings

03.15.13 - NASA will host a news conference at 8 a.m. PDT (11 a.m. EDT) Thursday, March 21, to discuss the first cosmology results from Planck, a European Space Agency mission with significant NASA participation.

  • A white circular structure ringed with pink clusters of old stars

Hubble Gazes on a Rosy Ring Galaxy

03.15.13 - Ring galaxies are mysterious objects. They are thought to form when one galaxy slices through the disk of another, larger, one.

  • A wider view places G306.3 0.9 in context with star formation regions in southern Centaurus. Chandra X-ray observations, Spitzer infrared data, and radio observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array are merged in this composite.

NASA's Swift, Chandra Explore a Youthful 'Star Wreck'

03.15.13 - NASA's Swift satellite has uncovered the previously unknown remains of a shattered star which ranks among the youngest-known supernova remnants in our Milky Way galaxy.

  • Two Brown Dwarfs in Our Backyard

Closest Star System Found in a Century

03.11.13 - NASA's WISE mission has found the closest star system discovered since 1916 -- a pair of brown dwarfs right in our celestial backyard.

  • Hubble image of part of spiral galaxy IC 5052

Blue Bursts of Hot Young Stars Captured by Hubble

03.08.13 - This image, speckled with blue, white, and yellow light, shows part of the spiral galaxy IC 5052.

  • This is a Digitized Sky Survey image of the oldest star with a well-determined age in our galaxy. The aging star, cataloged as HD 140283, lies 190.1 light-years away.

Hubble Finds Birth Certificate of Oldest Known Star

03.07.13 - This 'Methuselah star,' cataloged as HD 140283, has been known about for more than a century because of its fast motion across the sky.

  • Gravitational lensing distorts Hubble's view of this spiral galaxy in the Abell 68 cluster.

Gravitational Lens Creates Space Invader 'Cartoon'

03.05.13 - A phenomenon called gravitational lensing gives this spiral galaxy the look of a simulated alien from the 1970s "Space Invaders!" arcade game.

  • This artist’s impression of Herschel is set against an image captured by the observatory

Herschel to Complete Its Mission Soon

03.05.13 - The Herschel space observatory is expected to exhaust its supply of liquid helium coolant in the coming weeks, after spending more than three years studying the cool universe and surpassing the expectations of the international team of scientists involved.

  • The familiar forms of ice, including snowflakes, left, are built from crystals, but amorphous ice, right, is unstructured.

Goddard Lab Works at Extreme Edge of Cosmic Ice

02.27.13 - Goddard scientists turn ice into tiny test tubes to learn how chemicals involved in life might survive in space.

  • Hubble view of planetary nebula ESO 456-67

Hubble Observes Glowing, Fiery Shells of Gas

03.01.13 - It may look like something from "The Lord of the Rings," but this fiery swirl is actually a planetary nebula known as ESO 456-67.
